On the Twentieth Century

Book and Lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green
Music by Cy Coleman
Based on a play by Ben Hecht and Charles MaCarther and also a play by Bruce Milholland

On the Twentieth Century is a lively musical comedy set in the 1930s, featuring a glamorous journey aboard a luxury train where egos clash, romance blossoms, and theatrical shenanigans unfold, delivering a delightful blend of humor and heart.

This production is made possible by our generous season sponsors, Michael and Mona Heath.

Praise for On the Twentieth Century

"... here's a chance to hear one of (Coleman)'s best scores fervently sung by young voices and this consistently likable and earnest troupe... All in all, here's a trip for retro Broadway fans who like their musicals up yet roaring down the track." -Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

"On the Twentieth Century absolutely shines as it showcases the considerable talents of everyone involved."
-Karen Topham, Chicago on Stage

"On the Twentieth Century is ultimately a luggage car full of laughs. And this production is a clear labor of love from Blank Theatre’s creative team, whose passion and care for the material sounds as loud and clear as a train whistle."
-Zac Thriffiley, Broadway World

"Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to this classic, this production is a must-see, offering a splendid ride from start to finish." -Frank Meccia, Around the Town Chicago
